App Usage

Entry Won't Send - "Something Went Wrong" Appears â–¼

If your entry isn't sending and you see a message saying "Something went wrong" with a "Try again" button, try the following:

  • Go to Help inside App, click the first question and follow the steps
  • Check your internet connection - A stable connection is crucial
  • Log out and log back in - You can do this from the "You" section (person icon in the top right corner)
  • Try recording the next day - Sometimes, this automatically resolves the issue
  • Pull down to refresh the journal
  • Still not working? Please contact us — we'll do our best to fix it ASAP! The easiest way is to click the three dots and send feedback.
Poor Text-to-Speech Quality (Errors & Mistakes) â–¼

We regularly test various speech recognition models to improve your experience. If the transcription quality isn't great, try these steps:

  • Give negative feedback and select the correct reason ("Poor speech-to-text quality")
  • Edit the note
  • Persistent issues? Contact us, and we'll look into it!
Incorrect Proper Names (Friend's Name, Pet's Name, Places, etc.) â–¼

If the AI misrecognizes a name, try the following:

  • Give feedback by selecting one or two stars under the entry summary
  • Edit the "Notes" section in "Profile & Settings" - We have a dedicated space where you can manually correct names
  • Need more help? Tap the three dots and select "Send Feedback"
Snapshot is missing key information â–¼

If your AI-generated summary doesn't capture important details:

  • Edit snapshot - just add important information
  • Give feedback by rating the entry
  • Need more help? Tap the three dots and select "Send Feedback"
AI Says Things That Never Happened â–¼

Unfortunately, this can happen - it's called AI hallucination. AI models sometimes generate details that weren't in your original entry.

If you notice inaccuracies, you can edit the snapshot or provide feedback to help us improve the AI's accuracy.

How to transfer Your Journal to a new device â–¼

If you've got a new phone and want to move your journal, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on Tellself Cloud Backup on your old device. Tap "Force Backup" before switching devices
  2. Use the same login method on your new device
  3. Enable Tellself Cloud Backup on your new device, then tap "Restore Backup"
  4. Check your entries to make sure everything has synced correctly
  5. Once you confirm your journal is fully restored, you can safely remove the app from your old device

Transferring between Android and iOS is only possible with the Tellself Cloud backup method (which we recommend)

Why is there no chat with my Journal? â–¼

There are two main reasons why we don't include a chat feature:

  • Clarity Over Conversations: We give you ready-to-go themes and charts covering different areas from relationships, stress to productivity. This approach provides far more value than making you guess the right questions
  • Privacy & No Cloud Storage: We don't store your journal on our servers. This keeps your data private and secure

We're always experimenting, and if we find a way to introduce a smart, useful, and private chat experience, we'll explore it!

Why suggestions might seem basic â–¼

To experience the full magic of personalized insights, two key factors matter:

  • Journal consistently - You need enough entries to see patterns
  • Write meaningful content - Entries should be detailed and cover various aspects of your life

If you've recorded fewer than 10 entries, the suggestions will naturally be limited in quality. The depth and variety of your entries significantly impact suggestion quality too.

Remember, you can give feedback on any suggestion — just click the three dots.

Why do we make so many updates? â–¼

We use the app every day and absolutely love what we're creating. We're pouring our hearts into testing and implementing every idea. Plus, we're really listening to you - most of your feedback makes it into the app!

Our beta channel sometimes gets two updates in a single day! We try to be more chill on the main channel, but with so many cool features and improvements being added weekly, we sometimes can't wait to release new versions.

Can an app replace therapy? â–¼

While our app provides valuable insights and helps with self-reflection, it is not a replacement for professional therapy. If you're dealing with serious mental health issues, please consult with a qualified healthcare professional.

How to delete your account â–¼

We believe everyone should be able to easily and quickly delete their account - no reason required.

To do this, go to Settings, then in the Account section select "Delete Account" and follow the instructions.

Warning: This will permanently delete your account, and the action is irreversible.

Best Practices for Using the App â–¼

Here are some personal tips from a user with 300+ entries:

  1. Habit Matters - Journal every day, ideally before going to sleep. The fresher the day is in your mind, the more emotions and details you'll capture
  2. Just Do It - Don't overthink it. Just open the app and start recording
  3. It's Harder Than You Think to Restart - If you take a break and stop recording for a week or more, getting back into the habit can be tough
  4. Don't Aim for Perfection - Focus on the habit. Open the app, record, embrace gratitude, check insights, and move on
  5. Find Your Flow - Spend 4-8 minutes daily in the app. Check the dashboard every 3-4 days, and read longer reports weekly
  6. Learn by Doing - Be as descriptive as possible when recording

Is it really free? â–¼

Yes! Our mission is to help everyone reflect on life. The free version includes:

  • Create journal entries
  • Get AI insights with the same quality as premium
  • Cloud backups
  • Themes and export functionality

You can stay on the free version forever - we won't be mad! Simple and fast journaling plus insights will always be free.

Premium reports require advanced processing, which comes at a cost. If you buy a subscription, we'll be incredibly grateful - it helps us grow!

Why is the App priced this way? â–¼

We face high AI-related costs to bring you meaningful, personalized insights. Unlike most journal apps that only store text, we provide continuous AI-powered analysis that requires ongoing resources.

We're doing our best to keep as much as possible free while ensuring the app remains sustainable. Many apps charge extra for basic features like dark mode or cloud backups - we provide all of that for free.

Why do we use a Subscription model? â–¼

Each time you create a journal entry, we process it using advanced AI models to generate personalized insights, summaries, and analytics. These AI services need lots of computer power and must be updated often.

While a one-time payment might cover initial development costs, it cannot sustain the recurring expenses of AI processing that happens with every new entry you create.

Bought subscription plan (TellMeMore), but it's not working â–¼

If you've purchased a subscription but the app is still in free mode, we're really sorry about that. While this issue is rare (~1% of payments), we know it can be frustrating.

First, go to the Help section inside the app, click on 'Subscription Problem,' and follow the steps provided. If that doesn't help, please let us know using the form below. We treat these problems as a top priority and aim to fix them as soon as possible

How to use coupon code? â–¼

To apply your coupon code, follow these steps:

  1. Open the app and go to the last screen, "You" (bottom navigation)
  2. Tap "Join TellMeMore" and scroll to the bottom
  3. Tap "Join" again, then select a payment method and choose "Redeem Code"

Important: After redeeming your coupon for free days, it will automatically convert into a paid subscription once the free period ends. If you only want to test the premium features, you must cancel the subscription immediately after applying the coupon.

Will you increase my subscription price? â–¼

Short answer: only for new users.

If you're already a member, your price stays locked in for as long as you keep your subscription active. No unexpected price hikes!

If you were a subscriber before but took a break, reach out to us. We'll send you a coupon code for a free month (or more, depending on your subscription history) to make going back easier.

Privacy

Do you read my Journal? â–¼

Short answer: No - because it's stored only on your device.

Here's how it works:

  • When you record, we package everything (voice/text note + previous entries)
  • The data is temporarily uploaded to our servers
  • The AI processes your entry and returns the journal to you
  • Your data is never stored - it disappears from our servers within minutes

Every transfer is fully encrypted. We use this app ourselves and built it to be safe.

Do you use my Journal to train AI? â–¼

No. We don't store journals, which means we don't have your data. And without data, it's impossible to train an AI model.

When we use third-party AI tools, we only use open-source or enterprise-grade models that explicitly forbid training on user data.

We improve the AI through anonymous ratings, not your journal data!

I might get someone else's entry! â–¼

This is impossible. Each journal is processed separately, and your data never touches anyone else's.

What you're experiencing is called AI hallucination - a phenomenon where the AI misinterprets language patterns and generates unexpected details.

What you can do:

  • If the issue appears in insights, record your next day - it should self-correct
  • Ensure your journal transcripts are clear
  • Remember: AI is getting better, but it's still not perfect
How to lock your Journal â–¼

Want to lock your app so no one can read your journal without a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID? Go to Settings, select "App Lock," and follow the instructions.

Backup

Should I use tellself Cloud or Google Drive for backups? â–¼

We strongly recommend Tellself Cloud because it's more reliable and works across devices. We've built a safe, secure backup method that gives you full control of your data and ensures it always works.

Use private Google Drive only as a last resort — some users have reported problems with their Google Drive, and since it's your storage space, we can't assist with issues there.

Can you bring my journal back? â–¼

No. Your journal is stored only on your device, so if you lose your phone, you lose your journal - we don't keep it in logs, servers, or anywhere else.

The only exception? Cloud Backup.

That's why we STRONGLY recommend turning on Cloud Backup - it's free, secure, and private. If you don't enable it and lose your device, there's nothing we can do to recover your data.

Can I or anyone else access my Google Drive backup? â–¼

Short answer: No - not even you. Only our app can access it.

The backup is stored in your own Google Drive, but neither you nor other apps can open or view this data - it can only be accessed by our app for restoration.

Want to check if your backup exists? You can do that here:

Warning: If you delete the backup from there, it's gone for good - so be careful!
